The daiquiri cocktail is one of the most interesting cocktails that we know and many of us didn’t even know it. That’s why I’m here to tell you a little more about its history. And that from now on you enjoy it as always, but knowing a little more.
There are many versions and a lot of daiquiris, mango, strawberry, melon, banana and basically anything you want, but originally everything started like this …
There are those who say that it is a cocktail that was born on a Santiago beach with the same name. Others that in a copper mine on the beaches coming to the area.
We can call it Papa Doble, Hemingway Daiquiri or Hemingway Special. And is that the famous writer (and lover of alcohol) suffered from hemocratosis, so he devised a variant with less sugar but twice as much rum. When Ernest traveled to Floridita in Havana, he used to ask for his daiquiri in this way and that is how Ernst Special was born.
You see, not only mojitos live in Cuba. Daiquiri is also a famous cocktail on the island.
Initially, the drink was consumed locally, always served in a tall glass on ice. But like everything, it evolved to what we know today served in a coupe glass.
In the 1930s and 1940s, taking daiquiri was a must when Americans visited the island.
How to prepare a daiquiri in conditions
His recipe is a combination of rum, lime, and syrup invented by one of those engineers who worked in the mines around 1900.
Evil tongues say that this recipe is like the grog, another drink that British sailors drank in 1740 to prevent scurvy by mixing their portion of rum with limes (native lemons) or lemons to which they also added some water and sugar .
It was the most common drink in the entire Caribbean and although there are many ways to prepare it as I already mentioned, in yummy recipes we want to show you the original way of making it.
It only has three ingredients: lime juice, rum and sugar syrup (which counteracts the sweetness of sugar and alcohol). Is is a quite powerful cocktail for which you will need:
- 70 ml the proportion of alcohol, in this case rum, is the highest proportion.
- 50 ml of lime juice (you can also use lemon pulp, but in this case you will have to add a little more sugar since it is too acidic).
- 30 ml of sugar syrup.
Shake it in a cocktail shaker and serve it cool. If the rum is in the fridge better than better, so you won’t have to put ice.
We hope that whether you like Hemingway or not, the daiquiri is delicious as always.
Health! Enjoy wisely!
